Sewing Tools & Trinkets: Collector's Identification & Value Guide
Published in Hardcover by Collector Books (December, 1996)
Author: Helen Lester Thompson
Average review score:

For the collector of sewing items
Helen Lester Thompson's Sewing Tools & Trinkets is a collector's identification and value guide, covering everything from thimbles and needle holders to toys and trinkets. A very specific reference for the collector of sewing items.

Excellent source for the collector
This is an excellent source for the collector of antique sewing implements. Full color illustrations of all priced objects make it easy to identify and place a value on pincushions, needlecases, thimbles and more. Not much text but price guides are generally short on text. If a price guide is what you want, I recommend this one.

Sister of the Road: The Autobiography of Box Car Bertha (American Biography Series)
Published in Library Binding by Reprint Services Corp (January, 1937)
Author: Bertha Thompson
Average review score:

the best road book of all time
this is a quick recommendation: sister of the road predates kerouac, and box car bertha is the original beat writer. it is a wild and vivid (and true) tale of life in depression era america. all hail the power of WOMAN.

Boxcar Bertha--American original
This is a key book for anyone who wants to understand where the Beats came from, for anyone who wants an unflinching inside look at the harsh labor movement of the 1930s, for anyone with an interest in the great, lost Hobo culture of America, or any student of women in America. There is a clear, unbroken line from Boxcar Bertha through Kerouac and Cassidy, and right up to Emmett Grogan and the Diggers of Haight-Ashbury. Bertha Thompson was born to a leftist, labor-organizing single mother. While living in their various homes, Bertha watched her mother openly take lover after lover. Her mother saw men as companions and amusement, not as meal tickets. The era's most important Labor organizers passed through their house, many of them on the lam. The all-female Thompson family experimented with 1930s communes and free love communities. On her own, Berhta took to the rails. She writes about life on the road for a woman, the violent labor struggles she took part in, the Hobo Colleges, the drug underground of the era. Bertha took an eyes-open, voluntary turn as a prostitute and was astonished by the power her pimp came to have in her independent life. "Sister of the Road" takes the reader on a wild, skidding ride through the strange and brutal underbelly of America in the Depression years. There is no other book even remotely like it. --

The Smithsonian Guides to Natural America: The Pacific Northwest Washington and Oregon (Smithsonian Guides)

A great guide to the Northwest
As a resident of Washington state who enjoys the natural beauty of the area, I found this book to be a most helpful and inspiring guide. The authors are knowledgable about the natural history of the region, and the text is accompanied by many beautiful photographs. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone planning to visit the area for the first time, or to residents of the Northwest who want to learn more about the natural bounty that their region has to offer.

The best guide to natural areas in the Northwest
As a resident of Washington state who loves the natural beauty of the region, I've found this to be the most helpful, informative and nicely illustrated guide to the natural areas of Washington and Oregon. The book is well written, with beautiful photographs, and has not only inspired me to visit a lot of new places but has enriched my experience of those places I was already familiar with. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone planning on visiting the Northwest --- and especially to those already living here!

Speaking for Profit and Pleasure: Making the Platform Work for You (Part of the Essence of Public Speaking Series)
Published in Paperback by Pearson Allyn & Bacon (09 September, 1997)
Author: William D. Thompson
Average review score:

Very Good Book
I highly recommend this book!

Best First Book on Speaking for Profit
Well written and well organized. The cover and the Editorial Review are honest reviews-refreshing. Book is neatly broken down into three parts. 1. Why People Speak 2. Growing as a Speaker and 3. The Business of Speaking. Chapter 7 (Avocational Speakers) is a wonderful review on how to take the first steps toward getting known as an excellent speaker and being in demand as a speaker locally. It evaluates the process in excellent detail and lists in Appendix F Some Associations That Engage Unpaid Speakers. A particularly targeted audience of this book is how to use Toastmasters International as the jumping off point and were to find other coaching and training. Then, how to step out of that organization to further develop along the path toward considering making money from public speaking. Different than other "Get Rich Quick by Speaking" books, he does not glamorize the process to sell a book. There is no wasted time on the subject of how the rich and famous can make money speaking. The book is devoted to finding a way to profit if you simply get good at speaking. He covers why you need to be an expert on something of interest to get chances to speak. The book helps you sort through the process of finding the topics, audience and eventually get paid. One book lists the currently popular topics for paid speakers and says do one of these topics. This book encourages you to find your own topic and work toward finding the audience that will pay for it. This task is covered in considerable detail. In a prior reviews of authors sponsored by Toastmasters International the books can be a disappointment. This one is not.

The Standard Catalog of Comic Books (Standard Catalog of Comic Books)
Published in Paperback by Krause Publications (October, 2003)
Authors: John Jackson Miller, Maggie Thompson, and Brent Frankenhoff
Average review score:

Overwhelming!!
This catalog provides a wealth of information for collectors of comic books. It can be overwhelming for a novice (me) to absorb, but what fun I will have while I learn. Definitely a worthwhile investment.

Great big reference book
This thing is a monster. It has details on nearly every comic published, through to September 2001 or so. Besides the usual pricing information, if also includes circulation info (for some titles) and CGC info (how many copies have been CGC'd, and what the highest grade is). Many titles have a short series synopsis included, with information on storylines, creators, and anything else that might be interesting about a title.

Stepped on by an Elephant

Author: Wendell C. Thompson

A Must Read
This book places you inside the mindset of a man going thru a heart transplant surgery. This read starts out exploring his childhood, military background, marriages, in detail. A very personal reflection of a man, his life threatening sugery and how he has come to terms with the whole ordeal. A Good Read!

Not only for Transplant or Terminally Ill Patients
I was so enveloped in the authors mind that I could feel his agony and torment at the prospect of knowing someone would have to die in order for him to live. He keeps you inside of him from childhood to the succcessful transplant. I have not read a book before that made you see and feel the beauty of the landscape at the same time. A very enjoyable book, not all gloom and doom, some very funny chapters in his life.

Take Charge of Your Child's Health: A Parents' Guide to Recognizing Symptoms and Treating Minor Illnesses at Home
Published in Paperback by Marlowe & Company (15 June, 2000)
Authors: George Wootan, Sarah Verney, Marian Thompson, and George, MD Wootan
Average review score:

A terrific resource!
Because my twins were premature, I felt I had a crash course in a BUNCH of medical jargon. As time passed, I realized that the quality of their care depended upon how much I know. This book is a wonderful tool for parents to become a strong advocate for their child's health and well being and I HIGHLY reccomend it!

An Essential Guide
Somehow I have collected quite a collection of home medical guides - I have everything from the Mayo Clinic's Guide to your baby's first year to Sears and Sears's "The Baby Book". In "Take Charge of Your Child's Health", Wooten and Verney have done a masterful job of providing medical information and parenting advice that every parent needs. Their review of the pros and cons of immunization, for example, is based on the latest science and is the best I have read. They provide excellent advice on dealing with fevers, ear infections, colic, allergies and a myriad of conditions both minor and serious that parents may encounter. A strong thumbs up for Take Charge of Your Child's Health . . . .

A wonderful book!
I cannot say how impressed I am with The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library, they truly are wonderful books. There's No Place Like Space! is fun to read and helps children understand space and our solar system in a fun rhythmic way. My son loves this book and has shared it with his pre-school class with high praises from his teachers. The information in this book will give a young child a good base of knowledge for future learning.

Loved by both young and old alike
This book is wonderful! I feel that any time a book sparks the interest for young people it deserves high praise. My daughter enjoys all of the books in the Dr. Suess Learning Library Series, but especially this one.

The Ulcer Story: The Authoritative Guide to Ulcers, Dyspepsia, and Heartburn
Published in Hardcover by Perseus Publishing (October, 1996)
Author: W. Grant Thompson
Average review score:

Very informative
For those of us suffering from both known and unknown stomach maladies (in my case the wonderful catchall dyspepsia, for which there is no cure -- see this book to have that driven home in full force!) The Ulcer Story is highly informative. Although it is written in quite a professional tone -- no layperson here -- still, I believe anyone can understand it and benefit from the many detailed descriptions of treatments, as well as the photographs.

I highly recommend this book.

A must for your reference library if your have an ulcer!
Stop looking. This book is a one stop guide that will enable you to understand what your body is doing in those places you can't see, but you KNOW they are there. I believe every doctor should update their ulcer related knowledge by reading this book. "The Ulcer Story" is written in an easy to digest manner, so don't hesitate in finding out about YOUR stomach.

I had H. pylori previous to discovering through an Endoscopic exam that a Peptic ulcer hadn't healed and a growth developed on a healed Duodenal ulcer. Result: Surgery. Afterward, I was so sick and no one had an answer for "what do I do now"?

Get this book before surgery. Find out your options for treatment before and after. Take it with you to the doctors office. Go armed with information that will help you be a smart consumer. You couldn't spend your time better or money wiser.
